at which about 1,340 guests attended, but it is estimated that
about 5,000 were present at a fête given immediately after-
-wards in the Public Gardens.

An immense sum must have been spent in
all by residents in the Colony in decorating their houses for
the occasion. The conspicuous Government Buildings were also
decorated and illuminated very effectively.
b.
In conclusion I would add that a most
gratifying feature of the celebrations was the loyalty and co-
-operation of the Chinese community both in the old Colony and
in the New Territories and the cordiality shewn by the various
Foreign Communities.
